Barcelona (Spain) terror attack: Police confirm dead and injured after crash

Police say a “massive crash” in Barcelona city centre in which two people are feared to have been killed is a terrorist attack.

A white van mounted the pavement of the main tourist area in the city and struck several people, police said.

Several newspapers have reported two people have died and at least 20 have been wounded, and officials have confirmed there are dead.

Two armed men have since entered a Turkish restaurant and have taken hostages, one TV station is reporting.

El Pais says the perpetrators are holed up in a bar in the Raval district, on Calle Tallers, towards the end of Las Ramblas.

Footage from reporters on the ground shows armed officers combing a market.

One social media video post shows bodies strewn across the pavement for several hundred metres along the famous street.

The Ministry of the Interior said on Twitter: “There has just been a massive crash on the Ramblas in Barcelona by a person with a van. There are injured.”

Emergency services in Catalonia say they have asked the Metro and train services in the area to close.

They have also cordoned off the wide street and shut down several of the shops.
