Bangalore- BMTC plans to put 1,000 women behind the wheel

It will also utilise Nirbhaya Fund to build lounge for women and install CCTV cameras in 500 buses

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) will train 1,000 women in driving buses and light motor vehicles. The Corporation will utilise Nirbhaya fund to train women in driving. After getting required training, women drivers can also apply for driver’s job in the state-run corporations. Currently, BMTC has a lone woman driver, out of the 34,000 staff strength, operating from depot-07.

In addition to training women, the Corporation will also build separate lounge for women in major bus stands and install CCTV cameras inside the city buses. The Corporation is expecting a fund of Rs 35 to Rs 40 crore from the central government under Nirbhaya scheme.

A senior official from BMTC said, “The fund will be utilised for the welfare of women and to take up safety measures. At present, we have only one woman driver.

With this project, women can also apply for jobs to drive taxis and buses.

Aspirants will be given training in driving tracks of the Corporation.” The official said that CCTV will be installed in 500 city buses by using Nirbhaya fund.

The BMTC has been knocking the door central government to get the fund.
